Lyndsay McCandless

Lyndsay McCandless is the owner and founder of Lyndsay McCandless Contemporary. After graduating from Princeton University in 1991 with a degree in Studio Arts and Art History, she did the unthinkable and moved to Jackson Hole.  Her original plan was to stay for one ski season and then return to “reality” somewhere else. 17 years and numerous jobs later, Lyndsay has has created her own reality and evolved into an art activist in Jackson.

Lyndsay has been immersed in the arts in Jackson in many different forms. First and foremost, she is an artist and has exhibited in numerous venues over the years including Pearl St. Bagels, Betty Rock and the Art Association.  She worked for many of the valley's arts-oriented non-profits as an art teacher for all ages. She has been a board member of the Art Association for nine years.  Prior to opening her own gallery, Lyndsay worked at Martin-Harris Gallery for 6 years.

In 2003, Lyndsay decided to take the plunge and open her own gallery, Jackson Street Gallery. She found an old small-engine repair shop off a side street in Jackson and transformed a small corner of it into a clean contemporary show-space. In 2006, Lyndsay expanded into the whole building and changed the name of the gallery to Lyndsay McCandless Contemporary. The expanded space has allowed her to represent a large variety of artists and to host many different public and private events. She uses her space in innovative, community-focused ways and for this she was the recipient of the Award for Creativity in 2008 by the Cultural Council of Jackson Hole.

In addition to running her own gallery and promoting the cultural happenings in Jackson, Lyndsay is a mother of three girls: Cora, Sara and Olivia. In her free time, Lyndsay dominates in the ice hockey league on Sunday nights. Her team, the Sawzalls won the championship in 2008 and are looking to claim the back-to-back title in ‘09.  Natalie Balthrop

Natalie Balthrop is the assistant director of Lyndsay McCandless Contemporary. Originally from Chicago, Natalie ventured out east to Phildalphia for college. Natalie graduate from Villanova University in 2006 with a degree in English and Art History. Her post graduate plans were to move to New York City to pursue a career in the arts but had a total change of heart. Always a city girl, Natalie stepped out of her comfort zone and moved to Jackson Hole in 2007. She had never been on a chair lift before but learned how to snowboard during her first winter.

Natalie quickly saw Jackson as home and decided to make her life there. She began working for Lyndsay in May of 2007 and since then has been witness to the growth of contemporary arts in Jackson through the creative space that Lyndsay created. Natalie has assisted in the development of shows and helps Lyndsay promote the arts in Jackson through various artistic collaborations. Natalie is hoping to return to school in the fall to continue her Art History education and is excited to find out where her next adventure will be.
